What is Gentle Touch Massage?
Very often we may be stressed and busy, but our muscles may not be particularly tight, however we still feel the need to relax. Gentle touch massage works your tissue rather than your muscles so you relax, rather than your muscles.
This is perhaps the most holistic massage therapy that we offer at Essential Feeling as it works your mind and body in unison rather than more of a focus on muscles as you’d receive with a deep tissue or sports massage.
During your session, your massage therapist will use a combination of relaxing and slow strokes which vary in depth, speed and direction. Combined expertly with gentle muscle stretching and soft joint movement by your qualified massage therapist, gentle touch massage has been proven by a formal research study in Sweden to promote relaxation and reduce tension generating a sense of renewed vitality.
Conditions that may respond well to gentle touch massage
Symptoms of stress
High blood pressure
Fast heart beat
What is stress and why can it be dangerous?
Stress is your body’s way of reacting to external pressures. To go back in history, when we were cave men we needed our fight or flight response to speed up our reactions so that we could run away from danger. This physical action of escaping burned off the chemicals that our body created in response to the stress. In today’s society where we stress at work and traumatic stress is very often desk or car based we’re not able to physically burn off the hormones triggered by our fight or flight and so they build up and we suffer with many conditions associated with stress.
How do I know gentle touch massage will work for me?
Everyone responds differently to holistic therapies, but the University of Sweden has done some formal research in to the benefits of gentle touch massage which has shown that it does reduce stress. Of course, you may react differently, but you do have the benefit of fully qualified massage therapists administering your sessions.
Is there a consultation process before my gentle touch massage?
There is, we’ll send you a consultation form over by email before your first massage session so that you can complete this before you come for your session. We’ll run through this before we start your gentle touch massage and ensure that we’re both happy with your therapy.
Where will I receive my gentle touch massage?
We’ll discuss what you need from your massage in our consultation room, from here, you’ll move in to one of our purpose built massage therapy rooms. Your relaxation will start as soon as you walk in with soft lighting and a calm backdrop.
You’ll be left alone whilst you undress to your lower underwear and lie on the bed. Once you’ve covered yourself with 2 luxury towels you’ll give your therapist a shout and they will then come in to the room.
Who will treat me?
Your massage will automatically be allocated to Charlton.
What will happen during the treatment?
During your gentle touch massage, we’ll keep you covered with towels at all times (other than the area we’re working) so you have no modesty worries at all.
What do I do during a massage therapy treatment?
Nothing at all, this is your time, make yourself comfortable and relax. If your therapist needs you to move, then we’ll ask as required so you can just drift off and change position as you wish to ensure you’re comfortable throughout.
If you are too warm or cold during your gentle touch massage, please feel free to let your therapist know, they’ll be happy to adjust accordingly.
How will I feel after my gentle touch massage?
Everyone is different, but you could feel tired sometimes, or completely elated. The sure thing is though that you will feel more relaxed!
How often will I need a gentle touch massage?
As regularly as you like! There is no limit as to how many you can have, so it’s really down to your personal preference and lifestyle as to how often you feel you need to relax.
Why would I not be able to have a gentle massage?
There are a few conditions which mean gentle massage would not be the best holistic therapy for you. In this instance, we wouldn’t be able to treat you with gentle touch, but there are plenty of other holistic therapies that would be more suitable and we can help and advise you in making the best choice.
The following conditions would not be suitable:
Infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds
Immediately after surgery
Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
People prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage
Pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a massage.
Low blood pressure
Please Note: Gentle touch massage is a totally safe and complementary treatment (it does not replace medical treatment). If you are in any doubt at all, please consult with your GP prior to treatment
