What is pregnancy massage?

Having a baby is one of the most special times in a woman’s life but it can take its toll on your changing body; your hormones are all over the place, you’re feeling tired and then on top of that you have water retention and your muscles ache like you never believed.  Plus, you’re not as mobile as you once were so you can’t stretch tension out as you used to.  Essential Feelings specialist pregnancy massage deals with this whilst you lie comfortably on your side and certified pregnancy techniques are skilfully applied to ensure you get all the benefits of a massage in pregnancy that is tailored to your individual needs.

If I have a massage in pregnancy will this be tailored to my needs?

Yes. Our fully trained therapist will adapt your massage for your pregnancy.  We will connect mother and baby through the amazing power of touch.

We will relieve tension and back pain as well as alleviating swelling in your hands and feet by tailoring your pregnancy massage to the stage and needs of your pregnancy.

Conditions that may respond well to a massage and pregnancy

Muscle cramps, spasms, and myofascial pain particularly in the lower back, neck, hips, and legs

Relieves stress on your weight-bearing joints reducing aches and pains

Muscle imbalance and weakness due to postural changes can be aided by massage encouraging the lumbar area of your spine to regain balance

Water retention/ swollen limbs and joints by stimulating blood and lymph circulation – this also benefits your unborn baby

Enhances the pliability of skin and underlying tissues

Constipation - regular massage stimulates regular movement

Sciatic nerve pain can be reduced with regular pregnancy massage

Tranquil ‘me time’ promotes relaxation and stress reduction for you and your        baby

Relieves tension without medication that may harm your developing baby

Headaches and sinus congestion can be eased without medication

Childbirth can be helped with regular massage during your pregnancy.  Release         of chronic tension from your lower back, abdomen, and inner thighs         promote minimal resistance during your delivery

Is there a consultation process?

Yes.  If you have a computer, to save your treatment time, we’ll send you a consultation form to complete before you come along for your pregnancy massage.  This will allow you to detail any conditions you have such as aches and pains, allergies etc.  This will remain confidential between you and your therapist.  You will need to sign the form to say that you are happy to go ahead with the treatment.

When you arrive we’ll chat through this to fully understand what you would like to get out of your massage treatment and establish any areas that will require additional treatment.  We will then decide on a treatment plan.

I am having twins (or more) is massage for pregnancy still OK?

Yes, massage is beneficial for almost everyone.

Where will my pregnancy massage take place?

Your pregnancy massage will be in a comfortable, calm treatment room with soft lighting and will be just as relaxing as it is for a standard holistic massage with the added benefit of extra padding for your utmost comfort at all times.

After your consultation, your therapist will show you to your treatment room where you will undress to your lower underwear whilst the therapist is out of the room.  You will then lie on the massage couch on your side, cover yourself with 2 luxury towels & only then will your therapist re-enter the treatment room.  You will then arrange your additional padding to your personal requirements.

Who will treat me?

Charlton will be your massage therapist, please read our reviews page to find out what great things our clients have said about him.

What will happen during the treatment?

During your pregnancy massage therapy, your body will be covered at all times with soft towels, with the exception of the area you are having your pregnancy massage on of course! Your modesty will be maintained at all times throughout your massage treatment.

What do I do during my pregnancy massage session?

Make yourself comfortable. If your therapist wants you to adjust your position, he or she will either move you or will ask you to move as necessary. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.

During a massage your body releases toxins. This process can mean that your body temperature can change at any time, so please do say if you become cold. Likewise, if the pressure is too light or hard, then please feel free to say as everyone is different.

How will I feel after a massage?

You may feel tired or relaxed after your pregnancy massage; however, most people will then feel rejuvenated and full of energy.  You may experience some aches and pains for around 24 hours after your treatment as the body flushes the toxins that have been released out.  In order to speed this process along, drink lots of water after your massage.

I would like to bring on my labour – can pregnancy massage help?

Pregnancy massage can often help bring on a labour, but it is still down to your body to decide when you are ready to give birth.  You can also combine this with pregnancy reflexology for a multi-tiered approach.

Why would I not be able to have a pregnancy massage?

There are a few conditions which mean a pregnancy massage would not be the best holistic therapy for you.  In this instance, we wouldn’t be able to treat you with a pregnancy massage, but there are plenty of other therapies including reflexology that would be more suitable and we can help and advise you in making the best choice.

Is there anything that means massage during pregnancy is not advisable?

Women at risk for preterm labour would not be advised to have pregnancy massage
