There is no definitive causes of depression. It can occur for many different reasons.
Often the causes of depression can link back to an upsetting or stressful life event, but this may manifest differently e.g.bereavement, divorce, illness, redundancy and job or money worries.
If you’re already low, for instance, if you have been ill and so are feeling low anyway, a traumatic event will be more likely to take ahold and cause depression because you are already not feeling so strong.
There are also some studies which have shown that as we get older, we are more likely to get depression. Likewise, if people live in difficult social and economic circumstances, they are also more at risk.
