What is myofascial release massage therapy?
Myofascial release (MFR) massage therapy is a manual technique during which your massage therapist will apply gentle, but sustained pressure. This is a soft tissue modality which releases your fascia; a thick membrane which lies just under the surface of your skin and wraps as a band around your muscles and internal organs.
When you are sedentary, so for example at night when you sleep, fascia will grow harder. Whilst this has some positive effects such as maintaining posture, if the majority of your time is spent, in for example a poor posture, then this will be difficult to correct unless your fascia is released.
During your myofascial release massage, your therapist will target areas which are tight and works to loosen the fascia and release your muscles, organs and bones from restrictive and often painful positions.
Myofascial massage is an oil free massage that uses a series of slow moves to gradually stretch and release your fascia from under the surface of your skin. Sometimes if we think it will help speed up your progress, then we may combine this with deep oscillation therapy or ultrasonic cavitation.

Questions & Answers
What is myofascial pain syndrome?
Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain. Your myofascial tissues which become tight cause it and create sensitivity. As a result you could experience many of the disorders in the list below because these tissues surround and support the muscles throughout your body.
What will happen during the treatment?
During your myofascial massage therapy, your body will be covered at all times with soft towels, with the exception of the area you are having your myofascial massage on of course — this is a manual therapy and so this area will need to be exposed while it’s being worked. Your modesty will be maintained at all times throughout your massage treatment.
Is myofascial release therapy painful?
This is a therapeutic massage so some myofascial release techniques can be painful. For instance if we’re doing skin rolling then this can burn a little, but it’s only temporary and the relief following the treatment is immediate. It’s important to note though that this isn’t all of the session, only a small part. Some sections are incredibly relaxing.
How will I feel after a myofascial massage?
You may feel tired or relaxed after your myofascial massage, however, most people will then feel they have a new lease of life with their muscles feeling far more free than they can remember.
You may experience some aches and pains for around 24 hours after your treatment as the body flushes the toxins that have been released out. In order to speed this process along, drink lots of water after your myofascial release.
Is there a consultation process?
Yes. We’ll always email you a booking confirmation which will include a link to a consultation form that you need to complete and submit before your myofascial massage. Please do this so that your massage therapist has time to review it prior to your appointment. The form allows you to detail any conditions you have such as aches and pains, allergies etc. The details of this form are confidential between you and your massage therapist. You will need to sign the form to say that you are happy to go ahead with the treatment.
When you arrive we’ll chat through this to fully understand what you would like to get out of your myofascial massage treatment and establish any areas that will require additional treatment. We will then decide on a treatment plan and may decide to include some elements of deep tissue massage and/ or nerve reflexology.
